Metaphors for Pain

Metaphors for Pain

Reading a really interesting book. The Story of Pain – J Bourke. Gives fascinating examples of language used by patients over the ages, to describe Pain. Saw a patient with Gout yesterday as so this description was apt;

“Put your toe in a vice; turn the screw till you can bear the pain no longer; that’s rheumatism. Give the screw one turn more; that’s gout. In every respect, gout takes precedence.” ‘Good Qualities of Gout’ (1859).
